Cantona is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing and least known archaeological sites in Mexico. The ancient city was highly urbanized with elevated cobblestone roads, enclosed residential complexes, large pyramids, and 27 ball courts! Cantona was built as a fortified site with high walls and access into the city was heavily controlled. The main economic activity was the production of obsidian tools that were exported all across Mesoamerica.
At its height, the city housed over 90,000 people and reached a size of more than 12 km2. The site is located on a dry barren region of lava fields with little access to water, a fact that makes the settlement at Cantona even more impressive.
The stunning landscape and overwhelming architecture make Cantona a place you will never forget.

This was truly an amazing experience! After my wife and I booked the walking tour with Carmen on Airbnb we found out she also offered a tour to Cantona and we were so excited because I was dying to go. The archaeological site is incredible, unlike any other we’ve been to, and the meal Jaime prepared for us was delicious.
